About Tayne

A regional psychologist: warm, practical, and not remotely formal

Reaching out can feel uncomfortable, especially if you are used to managing things on your own. My approach is warm, practical and solutions-focused, without unnecessary jargon. We make sense of what is going on, work out which strategies are worth trying, and build a toolkit you can draw on later without me.

I have been registered since 2019, working across alcohol and other drugs, hospital settings, workers compensation and behaviour support. Stormbird Psychology is my own practice, and a deliberately small one: you will not be one of thirty-something clients a week, and you will not be handed between practitioners.

I live and work outside the major cities myself. Long travel times, limited local services, work and family demands, isolation and concerns about privacy are the reason every session here is telehealth (online). No more travelling for hours to get some support.

For GPs and rehabilitation providers

For referrers: you will hear back promptly

The most common complaint referrers have about psychology services is slow communication, or none at all. There is a set process and a written reporting template here, covering diagnosis where relevant, treatment plan, timeframes and barriers, so return-to-work planning is not held up waiting on a report.

What you get as a referrer

Timely written communication

A set process and written template for reports and updates, so you are not left chasing. Diagnosis where relevant, treatment plan, timeframes and barriers.

Return-to-work focus

Practical understanding of workers compensation pressures and the barriers to returning, for the client, the rehab provider and the referrer alike.

No wait list, after hours

Appointments are available immediately, including evenings and occasional Saturday mornings, telehealth (online) anywhere in Australia.

Scope of practice, and urgent support

Stormbird Psychology is not a crisis service. Appointments are booked in advance and there is no capacity for urgent contact between sessions, so a booking or email may not be seen straight away. If you need help right now, or you are having thoughts of hurting yourself, please contact one of these services.

Common questions

Answers before you book

I am not in crisis. Is therapy still for me?+

Yes, and this is a lot of what I see. Many clients are managing day to day but feeling the strain of a hard situation or a big change. You do not need significant symptoms to benefit from having someone to think things through with. Starting out uncertain is also very common, and the first session can simply be a way to work out whether it feels useful.

Do I need a referral to book?+

No referral is needed to book, but you will pay the full fee with no rebate. For a Medicare rebate you need a valid Mental Health Care Plan from your GP. WorkCover QLD clients need a claim number and Work Capacity Certificate for a pending claim, or case manager approval for an approved claim.

What happens in the first session, and how do I get started?+

Book through the client portal, or use the contact form and I will come back to you within two to three business days with the intake forms. The first session is a lot of talking: what has been going on, what you would like help with, your goals and background. You do not need to prepare anything. Early sessions are about assessment and getting to know each other, not instant fixes.

How long will I need to come, and how often?+

There is no fixed number. Some people come for short-term support of six to ten sessions, others prefer ongoing work for something deeper. Many start weekly or fortnightly then adjust. Progress gets reviewed as we go, and the aim is always for you to manage well on your own with skills you can draw on later.

You cannot fix my problem for me.+

That is true, and worth being upfront about. Therapy here is not somebody fixing you or solving the situation on your behalf. It is a space to make sense of what is happening, be challenged to look at it from a different angle, and build practical strategies you can use. The work is collaborative, and it does ask something of you, so it is worth thinking about whether that is the kind of support you are after right now.

Will you think I am crazy?+

No. Most of what people bring is an understandable response to something genuinely difficult, and a good chunk of the work is simply making sense of that. There is nothing you can say here that has not been said before by someone equally capable and equally worried about saying it.

Is everything I say confidential?+

Yes, with a few legal exceptions such as risk of harm to yourself or others, a court subpoena, or mandatory reporting. These get explained clearly in your first session. Where you have been referred by a GP, they will also receive a treatment-relevant summary, and this applies to all client types. WorkCover clients: your case manager or rehab provider will be given a diagnosis where relevant, treatment plan, timeframes and barriers, and anything beyond that is only shared with your consent.

How does telehealth (online) work if I am not good with technology?+

Sessions run over secure video. Intake forms are a link you click and follow the prompts, and the session itself is the same. You will want decent reception. Many people feel awkward or uncomfortable at first, which is totally normal, and we can work through it together.

What are the appointment times and cancellation policy?+

Currently 4.30pm and 5.30pm Monday to Thursday, 8am and 1.30pm Fridays, and 8am to 11am every second Saturday, with live availability on the booking portal. Please give at least 24 to 48 hours notice to cancel or reschedule. Late cancellations and missed appointments incur a fee, since that time was held for you and generally cannot be filled at short notice. This applies to WorkCover clients too.

Do you see WorkCover clients outside Queensland?+

No. I see WorkCover clients within Queensland only. I do not provide services to WorkCover clients in other states, and I do not provide services for TAC. Private and Medicare clients can be anywhere in Australia, since everything is telehealth (online).

What are your qualifications and registration?+

I am a general psychologist registered with AHPRA, registered since 2019, and a member of the Australian Association of Psychologists Inc (AAPi).
